Ingredients

  • 4 slices sourdough, white, or whole wheat bread
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 medium crisp apple (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Pink Lady recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • β…› teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: ΒΌ teaspoon cinnamon for a warm sweet flavor

Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Skillet or frying pan
  • Spatula
  • Butter knife
  • Cheese grater, optional

Method

  1. Wash the apple and slice it into thin pieces about β…›-inch thick. Slice or shred the cheddar cheese so it melts evenly during cooking.
  2. Place cheddar cheese on one slice of bread, add a layer of apple slices, then add another layer of cheese. Cover with the second slice of bread.
  3. Spread softened butter evenly on the outside of both bread slices, covering the edges for a crisp golden crust.
  4. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook the sandwich for 3–5 minutes on each side until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  5. Remove the sandwich from the pan and let it rest for 2 minutes before slicing. Cut diagonally and serve warm.

Notes

  • Choose firm apples to prevent excess moisture inside the sandwich.
  • Sharp cheddar pairs well with sweet apples because the stronger cheese flavor balances the fruit.
  • Keep the skillet temperature moderate. Slow cooking creates melted cheese without burning the bread.
  • For extra flavor, add a small pinch of cinnamon, honey, or cracked black pepper before cooking.
  • Serve with tomato soup, roasted vegetables, or a warm drink for a complete cozy meal.
