Ingredients

Smoothie Bowl
  • ½ cup strong brewed coffee, chilled and divided
  • 1 large ripe banana, sliced and frozen
  • 1 scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder
  • ¼ cup milk of choice
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup, optional
Optional Toppings
  • 2 tablespoons granola
  • Fresh banana slices
  • 1 teaspoon chia seeds
  • Cacao nibs
  • Sliced almonds
  • Nut butter
  • Greek yogurt

Equipment

  • High-speed blender
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small plate or tray
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Silicone spatula or spoon
  • Serving bowl

Method

  1. Brew ½ cup strong coffee and chill it completely.
  2. Cut the banana into roughly 1-inch slices and freeze in a single layer for at least 2 hours.
  3. Measure the protein powder, milk, cocoa powder, vanilla, cinnamon, and optional maple syrup.
  4. Place the frozen banana slices into a high-speed blender.
  5. Add ¼ cup chilled coffee and ¼ cup milk. Keep the remaining coffee aside.
  6. Add the protein powder, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and optional maple syrup.
  7. Blend for 30–45 seconds, starting on low and increasing the speed as the banana breaks down. Stop once thick and creamy.
  8. Check the consistency. If the blender struggles, add reserved chilled coffee 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture becomes smooth and spoonable.
  9. Transfer the smoothie into a serving bowl with a spoon or silicone spatula.
  10. Top with granola, banana, chia seeds, cacao nibs, almonds, nut butter, or Greek yogurt.
  11. Serve immediately for the thickest and coldest texture.

Notes

  • Use fully frozen banana for a thick smoothie-bowl consistency.
  • Keep the coffee cold. Warm coffee will melt the frozen banana and thin the mixture.
  • Start with only ¼ cup coffee. Add more only when needed.
  • For stronger coffee flavor, brew the coffee slightly stronger than you normally drink it.
  • Vanilla and chocolate protein powders both pair well with coffee.
  • If your protein powder is already sweet, taste the smoothie before adding maple syrup.
  • Prepare the coffee and frozen banana ahead to cut morning prep to about 5 minutes.
  • For the best texture, eat the smoothie bowl immediately after blending.
