Ingredients

  • 3 cups ripe cantaloupe, peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup orange juice, chilled
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey, optional
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes
  • 1 small pinch salt
  • Cantaloupe wedges or lime slices for garnish, optional

Equipment

  • Blender
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp chef’s knife
  • Large spoon
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Rubber spatula
  • 2 serving glasses

Method

  1. Select a cantaloupe that feels heavy for its size, has a tan or golden rind, and gives slightly when pressed at the blossom end. It should have a mild, sweet smell.
  2. Cut the cantaloupe in half from top to bottom. Use a large spoon to scrape out the seeds and loose fibers without removing the firm orange flesh.
  3. Slice the cantaloupe into wedges. Remove the rind, then cut the flesh into pieces about 1 inch wide. Measure 3 cups.
  4. Measure the Greek yogurt, orange juice, lime juice, ice, and salt. Keep the honey aside until after the first taste.
  5. Pour the orange juice and lime juice into the blender. Spoon the Greek yogurt on top.
  6. Add the cantaloupe cubes, salt, and ice. Keep the ingredients below the blender’s maximum-fill line.
  7. Blend on low speed for 10 seconds. Increase to high speed and blend for 30 to 45 seconds, or until smooth. Stop and scrape down the sides if needed.
  8. Taste the smoothie. Blend in 1 teaspoon honey for more sweetness or 1/2 teaspoon lime juice for more brightness. Add extra orange juice 1 tablespoon at a time if the smoothie is too thick.
  9. Divide the smoothie between two glasses. Garnish with cantaloupe or lime, if desired, and serve within 10 minutes.

Notes

  • Use chilled cantaloupe and orange juice for the coldest smoothie without adding extra ice.
  • A ripe cantaloupe gives the smoothie its strongest flavor. An underripe melon may taste watery or bland.
  • Add honey only after tasting because ripe cantaloupe may already be sweet enough.
  • If the blender struggles, turn it off before scraping down the sides. Never place a spoon or spatula inside while the motor is running.
  • For chilled serving glasses, place the empty glasses in the freezer for 5 minutes before pouring.
